The last time Evita was performed in Canberra, as far as we're aware, was in May 1988. A Canberra Philharmonic production ran for 6 performances at the Canberra Theatre. Jillian Donaldson starred as Eva Peron, with Stephen Fisher as Che and Phillip Dodd as Juan Peron. The production was directed by Stuart Maunder, with musical direction by Colin Fischer, choreography by Sami Shalom and costumes by Veronica Dzelde. Tickets were $17.
W. L. Hoffmann wrote of this production, "Having been present at the Sydney opening night of the professional production of Evita seven years ago, I can give no higher praise to this current Philharmonic production than to say that I enjoyed Firday night's performance just as much." (The Canberra Times, Thursday 12 May 1988)
If you were involved in this production, we'd love to hear from you (we'd also love to see photos). Please get in touch with us via or leave a comment below.

This Saturday we filled another skip load with rubbish from the yard ... and finally the yard is tidy! We had a good number of helpers out, lured by the promise of pies warmed in the pie warmer we found in the costume room. The pies were burning hot.
Inside the rehearsal room, work continued on the insulation - now over halfway stapling the sarking to the rafters. This work must be finished next weekend ahead of Evita auditions on the following weekend.
We've had a fantastic opening performances and received fabulous and audience and critical feedback.
"Canberra Philharmonic’s production of Cabaret will stand as one of the great standouts on Canberra’s Musical Theatre scene. Above the stage, the outstanding orchestra offers the reprise tunes as the enthralled audience leaves the theatre, aware that they have seen a Cabaret of the highest calibre. ... This Cabaret is a real feather in the cap for Canberra Philharmonic and the team. Don’t miss it!" - Peter Wilkins, Canberra Critics Circle
"Of the several stage productions I’ve seen of ‘Cabaret’ over the years, this one was the most pleasing of all. You’d be a dummkopf to miss it!"
- Len Power, Canberra Critics Circle
"This is a musical with a sense of history as well as a dark humour and the power to disturb comfortable thinking. It should not be approached with a light heart and Canberra Philharmonic Society’s production ultimately shows why."
- Alanna Maclean, The Canberra Times
"Angel Dolejsi is mesmerising as the edgy, reptilian MC, commenting on events, singing and dancing up a storm with the brilliantly choreographed and costumed Kit Kat girls. Dave Smith (Ernst Ludwig), Kitty McGarry (Frauline Kost) and Ben Trabinger (Max) contribute characterisations that are strongly supported by an excellent ensemble cast, superb orchestra and costume design for this outstanding Philo production."
- Bill Stephens, CityNews
A huge weekend - disassembling the set, packing the truck (in the rain), and reconstructing in the theatre. More photos here.
