This turbo-charged revision of Gilbert and Sullivan's classic operetta is suffused with pop-rock elements, comic timing and top-notch singing performed by Canberra best local talent. As funny and as entertaining today as it was when it first opened in 1879, THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE spins a farce of sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, dim-witted young lovers, dewy-eyed daughters and an eccentric Major-General, all morally bound to the often absurd dictates of honor and duty.

PIRATES is showing at Erindale Theatre for 13 performances, from 22 Oct to 7 Nov.
Tickets are available online and over the phone. More information is on our ticketing page.
Running time is around 2 hours 20 mins, including interval. This production is suitable for children.

This production is based on Simon Gallaher's multi-award winning production, starring Simon Gallaher and Jon English, which toured Australia in the 90's and was seen by over 2 million people. It is pure musical theatre with pantomime elements. While the original melodies and settings of arias and duets are untouched, the backing band and ensemble numbers add a rock feel.

"Judging by the rapturous applause at the finale of Canberra Philharmonic's upbeat version of The Pirates of Penzance, Kelda McManus' production does justice to the enduring popularity of Arthur Sullivan and W. S. Gilbert's satirical Victorian opera." - Peter Wilkins, The Canberra Times.

"GILBERT and Sullivan traditionalists may raise eyebrows, but those simply seeking a nice night’s entertainment will find much to entertain in the Canberra Philharmonic Society’s rollicking new production..." - Bill Stephens, CityNews.
